The State has presented evidence linking businessman Matlala to events surrounding allegations of corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Screenshots extracted from Matlala’s phone showed activity on 6 July, the day Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi publicly accused senior figures of political interference and shielding criminal networks in the SAPS.
During the press conference, Mkhwanazi identified North West businessman Brown Mogotsi as an informant for suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, a claim Mchunu has strongly denied. He also linked Matlala to alleged attempts to capture the justice system.
According to prosecutors, the phone records revealed that Matlala had been watching Mkhwanazi’s media briefing on the same day those allegations were made. They argued that the timing of this activity was significant in the broader context of the investigation.
Further analysis of the device uncovered contacts of interest. Among them was the number of a Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) officer, saved under the name “operator.” Another entry, listed as “contact number 18,” was traced back to Mogotsi.
