President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the reopening of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Museum following its renovation, describing the facility as an important space that encourages South Africans to better understand the role and purpose of the central bank.
Speaking at the relaunch of the museum and the redevelopment of the Reserve Bank’s tower block, Ramaphosa praised the institution for preserving the country’s financial history while making it more accessible to the public.
The president described the Reserve Bank as one of South Africa’s national treasures, alongside institutions such as the Union Buildings and National Treasury, highlighting its significance in the country’s democratic and economic landscape.
Ramaphosa said the reopening of the museum offered citizens an opportunity to engage with an institution whose work influences the lives, livelihoods and future prospects of all South Africans.
He noted that the Reserve Bank’s responsibilities extend beyond monetary policy, saying its work plays a critical role in safeguarding the country’s economic stability and protecting national wealth.
The president also welcomed the museum’s educational focus, particularly the inclusion of interactive exhibits and games aimed at children. He said these features would help younger generations develop an understanding of financial and economic concepts in an engaging and accessible way.
The revamped museum forms part of the Reserve Bank’s efforts to preserve its history while promoting greater public awareness of its role in the South African economy.
