Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia is expected to meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss the way forward following recent developments involving National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
The meeting comes after Masemola was served with a summons to appear in court in April, in connection with alleged links to a controversial R360 million SAPS tender awarded to businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The developments follow the arrest of 12 police officers earlier this week, who are facing charges including fraud, corruption and money laundering related to the same tender.
Calls are mounting for Masemola’s suspension as the investigation intensifies, although he remains in his position for now.
According to ministerial spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi, the meeting between the minister and the president could take place at any time from Thursday.
He noted that the appointment of the national police commissioner falls under the president’s authority, and any decision regarding Masemola’s future will follow legal processes.
The presidency is expected to consider legal advice before determining the next steps, as pressure grows over accountability within the country’s top law enforcement structures.
