Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu appeared before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations of political interference and corruption within the police service.
His testimony focused on claims that he sought the assistance of businessmen Brown Mogotsi and Vusimuzi Matlala to host a dinner in Cape Town earlier this year.
Mchunu denied any involvement, explaining that he was not in Cape Town at the time of the alleged gathering, as he had travelled to KwaZulu-Natal to attend a funeral following the ANC’s birthday celebrations in George.
Allegations of Political Funding
The inquiry heard that a witness is expected to testify that Matlala, who is facing murder charges, has been financially supporting Mchunu’s supposed ambitions to ascend to a top position within the African National Congress (ANC).
Mchunu rejected these allegations, stating that he has never met Matlala or had any dealings with either of the businessmen. He emphasised that claims linking him to any form of financial benefit or sponsorship are unfounded and unsupported by evidence.
Investigation into Police Corruption Deepens
The committee continues to hear testimony as part of its broader investigation into alleged corruption, political interference, and improper relationships between law enforcement officials and private business figures. Mchunu’s appearance forms part of a growing list of senior officials called to account for their alleged roles in the unfolding controversy.
