The legal team representing alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi Matlala has withdrawn an application seeking to compel the State to disclose additional evidence in his attempted murder case.
The development follows the handover of documents and other material that the defence argued were necessary to adequately prepare for trial.
Matlala, his wife Tsakane Matlala and two co-accused appeared before the Johannesburg High Court on Monday as proceedings in the matter continued.
Accused Face Multiple Charges
The group, together with another accused person, faces 25 criminal charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder linked to three separate shooting incidents.
One of the most prominent allegations before the court relates to an attack involving Matlala’s former partner, actress and socialite Tebogo Thobejane.
The case has attracted significant public attention due to the high-profile individuals involved and the seriousness of the allegations.
Trial Preparations Continue
Defence attorney Anneline van den Heever told the court that the State and defence would continue engaging on any remaining issues ahead of the trial.
With the disputed documents now handed over, the parties are expected to focus on resolving any outstanding procedural matters before the commencement of proceedings.
The trial is currently scheduled to begin on July 20.
Matter Postponed
The case was postponed to June 17 for further proceedings as preparations continue.
Matlala remains in custody at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre after previously securing a court order allowing him to remain at the facility while awaiting trial.
The matter forms part of a broader series of legal challenges facing Matlala, who has been linked to several high-profile investigations and allegations in recent months.
The High Court is expected to deal with any remaining pre-trial issues when the matter returns to court later this week.
