Suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni municipal manager Kagiso Lerutla are expected to learn next Tuesday whether they will be granted bail.

The matter returns to court after bail arguments concluded, with the State opposing their release and arguing that it would not be in the interests of justice.

Both men face charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice in connection with an alleged 2019 identity-switch scheme.

Prosecutors allege the pair colluded to have an impersonator appear in court on Lerutla’s behalf following a speeding arrest.

The State has also linked Lerutla to a fatal traffic incident, alleging he crashed into another vehicle, resulting in the driver’s death, and later paid a tow truck driver to dispose of the body.

Prosecutor Nceba Mtelwa argued that the alleged efforts to conceal the crimes demonstrate why both accused should remain in custody pending trial.
