The Pan South African Language Board, in partnership with media research company Focal Points, has announced the results of its annual Word of the Year survey, highlighting the terms and expressions that shaped public discourse in 2025.
For social media, the word “valid” was named South Africa’s Word of the Year. It emerged from a shortlist that included hao khonahale, nonchalant, clock it, nodolozana and ama1k, reflecting the influence of youth culture and online conversations on language trends.
Meanwhile, “G20” was selected as the overall South African Word of the Year after careful consideration of a wide range of words, terms and expressions.
It beat other prominent contenders such as Government of National Unity, tariffs, femicide and the Madlanga Commission, all of which were closely tied to the country’s political, economic and social landscape during the year.
The selection of “G20” reflects South Africa’s central role on the global stage in 2025, following the conclusion of its year-long G20 presidency in November.
The presidency culminated in a leaders’ summit widely regarded as successful, with the Johannesburg Leaders’ Declaration adopted on the first day of the meeting, despite a boycott by the United States.
In the months since, South Africa’s diplomatic relations with Washington have shown signs of improvement, further underscoring the significance of the country’s international engagements during the year.
In addition, the South African Sign Language Sign of the Year was awarded to the sign for “I love you”.
It was chosen ahead of signs representing phrases such as “so lekker”, “magnificent” and “constitution”, highlighting themes of unity and human connection that resonated strongly in 2025.
