The Limpopo Department of Education has suspended learning and teaching in parts of the province as flooding continues following heavy rainfall.
Schooling has been halted in the Vhembe District Municipality and Mopani District Municipality, which have been identified as the hardest hit areas.
The disruption comes after warnings from the South African Weather Service earlier in March about heavy rainfall that could trigger localised flooding and lead to the closure of roads and bridges.
The latest downpours arrive as Limpopo continues to recover from severe flooding in January that claimed at least 18 lives.
Authorities said schools in the affected districts will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday, although the suspension may be extended depending on weather conditions.
Officials have also reported incidents and infrastructure concerns in the Capricorn District Municipality and Waterberg District Municipality, raising additional safety concerns for learners and teachers.
Meanwhile, the University of Venda has temporarily suspended face to face academic activities due to persistent rainfall and flooding.
In a notice issued on Sunday, the university cited safety concerns including flooded roads, mudslides and damaged bridges that could endanger students and staff travelling to campus.
The provincial education department added that learners who miss scheduled tests due to the flooding will be given an opportunity to write them at a later stage.
