Ethekwini residents can expect some relief as the municipality has decided to ease recent water restrictions.
In October, the city implemented intermittent water supply measures due to heightened demand, leaving residents without water for several hours daily and reliant on water tankers.
The decision to lift the restrictions was made during a meeting on Wednesday between Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina and Mayor Cyril Xaba.
Despite the easing of restrictions, Minister Majodina warned that the water system remains vulnerable and urged communities to continue using water responsibly.
Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson Cornelius Monama confirmed that the Umngeni water supply system, which services the municipality, is under close observation.
Monama announced that the curtailments would be lifted immediately and remain suspended until mid-January, citing improved storage capacity in the Umngeni water supply system.
“The storage capacity of the Umngeni water supply system has improved to 85%, owing to the recent rainfall experienced in the catchment,” he explained.
