Load shedding has been suspended following a recovery in Eskom’s generation capacity. The power utility confirmed it had regained approximately 2,015MW, allowing for a temporary halt in scheduled outages.
This improvement, combined with a projected dip in electricity demand and adequate emergency reserves, enabled the suspension of load shedding from midnight.
While maintenance work remains ongoing to ensure the system can withstand increased winter demand, Eskom aims to return an additional 6,000MW to service by the coming Tuesday. The utility indicated it would issue a Power Alert later in the day or communicate further updates if necessary.
In Gauteng’s Tshwane area, teams were deployed to restore power in communities affected by storm damage, particularly where poles were broken.
Areas impacted by the outages included Bangladesh, Erasmus, Ga-Rankuwa Zones 7, 8, 9, 10, and 17, Hebron (Phases 1, 2, and Motseng Section), Itsoseng Phases 3 and 5, parts of Kgabalatsane, Matshelapata, Midas Square, and Odi View.
Electricity supply has since been restored to several of these areas, including Bangladesh, Ga-Rankuwa, Midas Square, Matshelapata, and Odi View. Restoration efforts are still underway in Erasmus, Hebron, and parts of Kgabalatsane, though no estimated completion time has been provided.
Earlier on Thursday, Eskom had implemented Stage 2 load shedding from 4pm, citing a surge in electricity demand, the unplanned loss of generation units, and the ongoing maintenance of several systems. However, the outages were brought to an early end by midnight after conditions improved.
