The Democratic Alliance (DA) has reiterated its dedication to the people of Tshwane, promising to uphold stability in the city despite ongoing political turmoil, which it attributes to the African National Congress (ANC) and ActionSA.

In a recent statement, the DA revealed that former Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink would be their mayoral candidate to continue the city’s progress.

Brink was previously ousted from office after the ANC and ActionSA, with support from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), passed a motion of no confidence against him.

The situation intensified when Herman Mashaba, in media interviews, claimed that ActionSA had made a deal with the ANC to appoint his party’s Nasiphi Moya as the new mayor.

This claim was quickly refuted by the ANC’s public statements, further suggesting that Mashaba had been misled into destabilising a functioning government that included his party.

DA leaders highlighted their attempts to convince the ANC’s national leadership to retract the motion of no confidence against Brink.

They argued that this would have allowed for a more stable environment to discuss Tshwane’s future.

The DA believes that if the ANC had agreed, there would have been sufficient time to reach a settlement beneficial to Tshwane residents.

However, the ANC, backed by its National Working Committee, chose to proceed with the motion, which the DA says not only showed bad faith but also bolstered the EFF’s negotiating position.

Solly Msimanga, DA Gauteng provincial leader, criticised the frequent changes in mayors, stating that it leads to deteriorating municipal governance and service delivery.

He also noted that the ANC’s internal conflicts worsen Tshwane’s challenges.

The DA condemned the ANC for its role in Tshwane’s financial troubles, especially after placing the city under provincial administration in 2020.

They argue that the current political climate threatens the city’s fragile financial recovery.

Msimanga emphasised the irresponsibility of dismantling a city government without a clear plan for its replacement, highlighting the potential negative impacts on residents.

The DA also stressed the importance of maintaining accountability, particularly in the disciplinary process against the Rooiwal five, and ensuring the City’s Labour Court application to dismiss them is upheld.

Additionally, they committed to projects aimed at providing clean water to Hammanskraal residents and reducing dependence on ineffective water contractors.
