Alcampo has invested €19.4 million (363 Million in Rands) in an automated warehouse with robots and AI to enhance its online shopping service.
The company has launched its Customer Fulfillment Centre (CFC) in San Fernando de Henares, Madrid, operated by Ocado, capable of processing 280,000 online orders monthly. Robots and AI automate product selection, packaging, and order fulfillment, eliminating the need for human workers in online order processing.
The system emphasizes food safety and traceability, ensuring containers for fresh products are cleaned. The CFC employs 30 robotic arms and 1,000 robots to handle about 500 orders daily, but it can process up to 4,000 orders, and Alcampo aims to increase this capacity.
Américo Ribeiro, general director of Alcampo in Spain, noted that the new facility signifies the “evolution” and “constant changes” in the sector and society. The company is dedicated to offering a quality, comprehensive, and competitively priced online shopping service.
Alcampo has teamed up with the Auchan Foundation, the Ábrego Association, and the Las Caderecha Valley Producers and Traders Association to establish an edible forest in Rucandio, Burgos.
The project will convert a hectare of unused land into a sustainable ecosystem with 1,600 native fruit trees and bushes, including rare varieties. The KeyLine system will be used to improve water management and soil health.
Residents can engage in environmental education and learn sustainable farming techniques, supported by a €40,000 (748,000 in Rands) grant from the Auchan Foundation.
