South African police have warned that no weapons, including traditional weapons, will be permitted during planned anti-illegal immigration protests scheduled for June 30.
The warning was issued on Monday as police management provided an update on security preparations for demonstrations that several activist groups have identified as a deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.
Law enforcement agencies say they are prepared to monitor and police the protests to ensure they remain peaceful and within the confines of the law.
National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) Chairperson Tebello Mosikili said authorities would take decisive action against anyone found carrying weapons during the demonstrations.
Police have stressed that while the Constitution guarantees the right to protest, participants are expected to exercise that right responsibly and without threatening public safety.
Authorities have also reiterated that demonstrations must not result in violence, intimidation, damage to property or threats to individuals.
The warning comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration issues in parts of the country and growing concerns over the potential for unrest during the planned marches.
Police have assured the public that operational plans are in place and that law enforcement officers will be deployed to maintain order and respond to any incidents that may arise during the protests.
Government officials have repeatedly called for calm ahead of the demonstrations, urging participants to engage peacefully and within the bounds of the law.
