Shamila Batohi, former National Director of Public Prosecutions, has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission cases inquiry that apartheid-era prosecutions were prioritised despite serious internal challenges within the National Prosecuting Authority.
Batohi explained that when she assumed office in 2019, the NPA was struggling with low staff morale, leadership instability, and limited resources due to the effects of state capture. She said these conditions made it difficult to effectively pursue long-outstanding TRC-related cases.
She was giving evidence before the inquiry led by retired judge Sisi Khampepe, which is investigating delays in prosecuting crimes linked to the apartheid era.
While Batohi maintained that steps were taken to address the backlog, she acknowledged the scale of the challenges faced by the institution. Her leadership has, however, been criticised by some for not achieving enough progress in advancing these cases.
