The case involving Bellarmine Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has been postponed to next week after proceedings could not continue in court.
Mugabe and his co-accused, Tobias Matondze, appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where they were expected to enter their pleas.
However, the matter was delayed due to the absence of a senior prosecutor, forcing the court to postpone the case.
Charges And Allegations
The pair faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, theft, defeating the ends of justice, and contravening the Immigration Act.
They are accused of shooting and injuring an employee at a residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg last month.
Plea Negotiations Underway
Reports indicate that Mugabe and Matondze’s legal team have been engaged in plea discussions with the State.
The two are expected to plead guilty to some charges while contesting others, although negotiations have not yet been finalised.
Mugabe’s lawyer, Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, confirmed that talks are at an advanced stage but could not be concluded due to the prosecutor’s absence.
Next Court Date
The case has been postponed to next Tuesday, when both parties are expected to return to court and potentially finalise plea agreements.
