Johannesburg, South Africa — Vodacom Group has announced a major strategic partnership with Starlink, the satellite broadband division of SpaceX, aimed at extending high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity across Africa, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Under the agreement, Vodacom will integrate Starlink’s satellite infrastructure as a backhaul layer to its existing mobile network, allowing it to boost coverage, network resilience and service quality in locations where traditional fibre or terrestrial links are impractical. The partnership will enable Vodacom to resell Starlink equipment and services to enterprise and small business customers across Africa, creating new connectivity products tailored to sectors such as mining, agriculture, tourism, retail and financial services.
From a strategic perspective, this deal advances Vodacom’s Vision 2030 goal of growing its customer base to 260 million and expanding its financial-services users to 120 million within five years, using satellite and terrestrial technologies in tandem.
The initiative comes at a time when bridging the digital divide remains a pressing challenge across Africa, many schools, clinics and rural communities still lack reliable internet access. By leveraging Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites, Vodacom aims to bring robust connectivity to remote locations, enabling online education, telemedicine, smart-agriculture and broader digital inclusion.
While formal roll-out dates and country-specific coverage plans are yet to be published, industry watchers in South Africa and across the continent will be watching closely to see how quickly the new offerings become operational, and how pricing and service tiers will be structured for rural, enterprise and consumer segments.
