Mabuyane Takes Legal Action Against Malema Over Defamation Claims

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has filed a defamation case against Julius Malema, accusing him of making false and damaging statements.

The application, lodged in the Eastern Cape High Court in KuGompo City, seeks to have Malema’s claims declared unlawful and to prevent him from repeating them.

At the centre of the dispute are allegations that Mabuyane fraudulently obtained a master’s degree from the University of Fort Hare. The premier has strongly denied the claims.

In court papers, Mabuyane argues that the statements have harmed his reputation and were made without evidence. He is also seeking damages, along with an interdict to stop further public remarks.

The legal action comes amid increasing pressure on Malema, who was recently sentenced by the East London Magistrates Court in connection with a firearm-related offence linked to a 2018 rally. He remains free while appealing the ruling.

Mabuyane’s spokesperson said the premier is committed to resolving the matter through legal channels, rather than public debate, as tensions between the two political figures continue to escalate.
