The community of Delft has been left shaken after a fatal shooting at a local taxi rank on Thursday morning.
According to police, three taxi operators were shot during the incident. Two victims died at the scene, while the third later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Authorities said a white Toyota Quantum allegedly drove up to the taxi rank before gunfire was opened on the victims, who were sitting inside a parked taxi at the time.
Police have since cordoned off parts of the taxi rank as investigations continue. The bodies of two victims remained at the scene, covered while forensic investigators processed the area.
Detectives from the police’s Serious and Violent Crimes Unit have been assigned to investigate the shooting.
A crowd of community members gathered nearby following the incident as shock spread through the area.
The attack comes just days after taxi operators marched to the Nyanga Police Station to raise concerns about a rise in taxi-related violence.
Operators linked to the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) have recently called for stronger safety measures at taxi ranks, including increased police patrols and the installation of surveillance cameras.
