The case that could cost Iranian rapper Amir Tataloo his life
TEHRAN — Iranian rapper and pop star Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, better known as Amir Tataloo, remains under a death sentence over allegations that he insulted the Prophet Muhammad, although an extraordinary judicial review means the controversial case is not yet at its final legal endpoint.
Tataloo, one of Iran’s most recognisable and controversial musicians, was initially sentenced to five years in prison in the case. After prosecutors challenged that outcome, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling and referred the matter to another court, which imposed the death penalty. Iran’s Supreme Court subsequently upheld that sentence.
The case concerns an accusation of sabb al-nabi, or insulting the Prophet Muhammad, an offence that can carry the death penalty under Iranian law. The sentence attracted international attention because of Tataloo’s celebrity and his complicated relationship with Iran’s political establishment.
His lawyers have since pursued an extraordinary review under Article 477 of Iran’s Criminal Procedure Code, which allows a final judgment to be reconsidered where it is alleged to be clearly contrary to Islamic law. A separate request based on repentance was also submitted under Article 114 of the Islamic Penal Code.
Reports about the precise effect of the Article 477 process have differed. IranWire reported in May 2025 that Tataloo’s lawyers said the death verdict had been overturned after the review request was accepted, while Iran Human Rights subsequently reported that the Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence and that the Article 477 application remained under consideration.
That distinction means reports that Tataloo has simply been sentenced to death without further legal proceedings do not capture the full status of the case.
Separate from the death sentence, Tataloo is serving a 10-year prison term for what Iranian authorities have described as encouraging corruption and prostitution. Iranian authorities have also accused him of offences connected to his online activities and content.
The 37-year-old musician had lived in Turkey since 2018 before Turkish authorities handed him over to Iran in December 2023. He has remained in Iranian custody since his return.
Tataloo’s history in Iran has been unusual. Despite repeatedly encountering restrictions over his music, he was at times embraced by conservative political figures. He released a song supporting Iran’s nuclear programme in 2015 and appeared alongside Ebrahim Raisi during Raisi’s 2017 presidential campaign. His relationship with the establishment later deteriorated as his music, online behaviour and public statements generated further controversy.
His death sentence has also drawn opposition from prominent Iranians, including rapper Toomaj Salehi, footballer Mehdi Taremi and other cultural and sporting figures.
For now, Tataloo remains imprisoned and his death sentence has been judicially confirmed, but the extraordinary review and clemency processes leave the ultimate outcome unresolved.
