South African shoppers using Temu may have noticed a smoother checkout process, with fewer steps after placing an order.
The platform has introduced a key update that changes how customers pay for their purchases, making pricing more transparent and predictable.
Under the new system, VAT and import duties are now included in the total price displayed at checkout. This means the amount shown before confirming an order is the final cost, with no additional charges requested after delivery.
Previously, customers often received separate payment requests from couriers once their parcels arrived in the country. Although efforts were made to simplify this through prepayment options, the process still caused confusion for some users.
By incorporating all costs upfront, Temu is aligning its checkout experience with other major global e-commerce platforms, while also reducing the risk of scams linked to post-delivery payment requests.
The change also benefits customers who need to return items. Refunds will now cover the full amount paid, including VAT and import duties, which were previously not always recoverable.
Shipping terms remain unchanged. Imported products are typically delivered free of charge, while items shipped from local warehouses may include a delivery fee.
Although prices may appear slightly higher at first, the updated system offers a clearer and more secure shopping experience, eliminating unexpected costs after checkout.
