SILVERTOWN — The global music industry is in mourning following the fatal stabbing of Grammy award winning songwriter Mark Orabiyi. The artist, known professionally as Talay Riley, was killed on Friday morning during what has been described as a violent incident on Rayleigh Road in Silvertown, east London.
Police were called to the property at approximately 9 am where they discovered the 35-year-old songwriter with multiple stab wounds. Although emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, he was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. A second victim, a man in his 20s, remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Metropolitan Police have launched a full-scale murder investigation into the attack. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke confirmed that while three people were initially arrested on suspicion of murder, two have since been released with no further action. A 27-year-old man has been released on bail as inquiries continue. Detectives are currently appealing for CCTV footage and witnesses to come forward to assist in piecing together the events leading up to the tragedy.
Orabiyi was a powerhouse in the international music scene, boasting an impressive catalogue of hits. He famously co-wrote Dua Lipa’s “Last Dance” and Khalid’s global smash “Young Dumb & Broke.” His creative influence extended to collaborations with major stars including Chris Brown, Nick Jonas, Usher, and Jessie J.
The songwriter’s family described him as a beloved son and brother who brought light and joy to everyone who knew him. His brother, fellow musician Scribz Riley, expressed his devastation on social media, stating that his heart was shattered by the loss of his mentor and inspiration.
Public tributes have poured in from industry heavyweights such as Stormzy and Craig David. US based label Position Music released a statement honouring Orabiyi as an extraordinary creative whose impact on the industry will be felt for generations. The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding violent crime in the capital, particularly as reports suggest the attack may be linked to local gang feuds.
