Flights at OR Tambo International Airport faced disruptions on Friday following a critical system failure reported by Air Traffic and Navigation Services. The issue has affected Air Traffic Control operations and is impacting flight management at the airport.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) confirmed the disruptions and clarified that the problem does not stem from its own systems.
Despite this, ACSA issued a public advisory warning of delays and changes to flight schedules, urging passengers to check directly with their airlines for the most recent updates. Travellers are also encouraged to download the ACSA mobile application for real-time flight information.
To avoid complications, passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before domestic departures and three hours before international flights.
The disruption comes shortly after ACSA announced its decision to end its relationship with Aviation Coordination Services, the third-party operator responsible for screening checked baggage.
This follows a security breach in which a passenger managed to fly out of OR Tambo International Airport with two training hand grenades in their luggage. The items were only detected after arrival at Bole International Airport in Ethiopia.
ACSA confirmed that the breach occurred in the Hold Baggage Screening area managed by Aviation Coordination Services. The company has since been informed that it has no legal contract to perform screening services, which contributed to ACSA’s decision to terminate its involvement.
Passengers are advised to stay informed and plan ahead to minimise the impact of any ongoing delays.
