An eight-year-old boy from Mapetla, Soweto, remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, four days after falling severely ill from eating snacks purchased at a neighbourhood tuck shop.
What was meant to be a fun end to the school holidays quickly turned into a traumatic experience for the Molobela family. According to his mother, Tshidi Molobela, her son began vomiting and losing the ability to move shortly after eating chips bought from a local spaza shop with his siblings last Friday.
Alarmed by his rapid deterioration, the family rushed him to the Chiawelo Clinic, where medical staff noted unusual symptoms, including severe discolouration of his stomach and the sudden loss of speech. Suspecting poisoning, doctors immediately referred the boy to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for emergency care.
Molobela said her son’s condition has been critical ever since. She revealed that his heart had stopped beating several times while in hospital, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Following the incident, the family opened a case at the Moroka Police Station against the owner of the spaza shop where the snacks were purchased. Authorities are now investigating the source of the suspected contamination.
