The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has placed journalist Natasha Phiri on precautionary suspension following allegations that she received money in exchange for information.
The development comes after testimony at the Madlanga Commission, where Sergeant Fannie Nkosi admitted to paying Phiri R500.
The commission previously heard that the payment was made in exchange for the contact details of social media blogger Musa Khawula.
Although Nkosi initially denied making the payment, he later admitted to it when confronted with evidence during proceedings.
Under questioning by Commissioner Sandile Khumalo, Nkosi confirmed that he had paid Phiri the amount. The transaction reportedly took place on November 6, 2024, with Phiri providing Khawula’s contact number on the same day.
During the hearing, Advocate Matthew Chaskalson pressed Nkosi to clarify whether the payment was made as a token of appreciation for the information.
Nkosi was hesitant to confirm this, stating that he would need to verify their communication. He added that the protection and integrity of sources should be upheld.
In response to the revelations, the SABC said it is treating the matter with seriousness and has suspended Phiri as a precaution while an internal investigation is underway.
