President Cyril Ramaphosa has voiced deep concern over deteriorating service delivery in his hometown of Soweto, south of Johannesburg.
Speaking during a meeting with Johannesburg’s leadership on Friday, Ramaphosa shared his dismay over the state of the city, recalling a recent visit to Chiawelo.
He was particularly shocked by the absence of functioning streetlights along the route connecting the city centre to the township.
Reflecting on his experience, he described the drive as unsettling, saying Johannesburg residents should not have to endure such poor service delivery.
“It was the other day that when I was going to Chiawelo in Soweto and I drove through the city and into the township and it was like driving through a dark city and I longed to see the beautiful contours of my city through street lights but there were none,” he said.
His concerns follow a surprise visit to the Johannesburg CBD last week, where he inspected Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) operations.
While he commended the JMPD’s efforts during their overnight patrols, he expressed disappointment at the visible decay of the city centre.
Ramaphosa’s remarks highlight growing frustrations over service delivery failures in Johannesburg, a city grappling with infrastructure challenges and urban decline.
