Advocate Dali Mpofu has become the latest prominent leader to depart Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.

Mpofu, who served as the EFF’s national chairperson for five years starting in 2014, announced his move to the MK party in an exclusive interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

In the interview, he revealed his key role in the MK party’s formation alongside Zuma, noting that the move had been in planning for over a year.

Mpofu’s official affiliation with the MK party comes more than a year after the party’s impactful entry into politics.

Reflecting on his decision, Mpofu said, “After a lot of soul-searching, I have taken a decision that I will be joining the MK party. I am joining the party because I believe it is the vehicle to achieve the much-needed black and progressive unity.”

Mpofu also stated that he had not yet informed Malema of his departure, though he had attempted to reach out.

He has also been involved in legal matters for the MK party since it was established last year. Even before officially departing from the EFF, Mpofu was frequently seen on stage with MK party leaders during their appearances at the Electoral Court, where he joined in party chants.

The EFF has seen several high-profile departures to the MK party recently.

Shivambu, who was once EFF’s deputy president, left in August, while former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane joined the MK party last month.

Others who have made the same move include, Mzwanele Manyi, who was once an EFF MP and now a MK party parliamentary whip.
