President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the release of South African nationals and other activists detained after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The flotilla was stopped on Wednesday while en route to deliver essential supplies to Palestinians. Israel claimed the vessels were attempting to breach its naval blockade of Gaza, though it remains unclear whether the boats had entered the restricted zone.
The Presidency criticised the seizure, saying it took place in international waters and constituted yet another violation of international law. According to government, the interception reflects Israel’s ongoing efforts to obstruct aid and deepens the suffering of the Palestinian people, who continue to face hunger and shortages under the blockade.
Authorities have confirmed that three South Africans are in Israeli custody, while officials are working to verify reports that three more activists were taken.
Ramaphosa has demanded their immediate release and stressed the need for humanitarian assistance to reach Gaza without obstruction.
