Cyril Ramaphosa has defended the appointment of Roelf Meyer as South Africa’s next ambassador to the United States, describing him as a loyal and committed citizen.
The president said Meyer is well suited to strengthen diplomatic ties with the US, despite criticism surrounding his past role as an apartheid era minister. Ramaphosa emphasised that Meyer’s political background was not a deciding factor in his selection.
Speaking during a local economic development summit in Boksburg, Ramaphosa explained that ambassadors are expected to represent government policy with neutrality and professionalism, regardless of their personal affiliations.
He added that Meyer’s experience in conflict resolution and his previous engagement with US officials make him capable of managing complex diplomatic relations.
According to Ramaphosa, Meyer has already been interacting with American political structures and is well prepared for the role.
Ramaphosa also expressed confidence that Donald Trump will accept Meyer’s diplomatic credentials, noting that South Africa has similarly received the credentials of the US ambassador to the country.
