More than 480 individuals, including four minors, appeared before the Barberton Magistrates’ Court on Monday following their arrest in connection with illegal mining activities.
The arrests took place on Friday, 1 August 2025, during a joint operation conducted by the police and Sheba Mine at Barberton Mine.
The crackdown formed part of Operation Vala Umgodi, a sustained initiative aimed at dismantling illegal mining syndicates operating in the region.
Charges brought against the accused include trespassing, the theft of gold-bearing material, and violations of the Immigration Act.
A total of 26 accused were granted bail of R2,000 each. The court found that these individuals had no prior criminal records, no pending cases, and provided fixed residential addresses. They were cautioned not to engage in any criminal activity while out on bail.
The State announced its intention to oppose bail for those facing additional charges or who have prior convictions.
The remaining suspects were remanded in custody, with proceedings postponed to 11 and 12 August 2025. These dates will allow for the verification of home addresses and further bail considerations.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the prosecution of illegal mining remains a priority. The NPA emphasised the serious threats such activities pose to the economy, public health, and the environment.
