The Department of Basic Education has revealed that one of its own human resources officials was responsible for the leak of several National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination papers.
The official is accused of giving the papers to her son, who then circulated them to others, implicating a total of 40 candidates.
During a media briefing on Friday, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube confirmed that seven papers were compromised.
These include English Home Language, Mathematics Papers 1 and 2, and the Physical Sciences paper. The breach has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the 2025 matric exams.
Forensic investigations are still underway, with officials working to establish which computer was removed from the secure centre where examination papers are drafted and stored.
According to Gwarube, investigators have also been analysing school performance patterns in search of irregular results.
Any confirmed wrongdoing will be attributed to specific individuals rather than entire schools unless evidence suggests widespread involvement.
The department says it will take decisive action once investigations are complete, aiming to protect the credibility of the examination system.
