Johannesburg, South Africa — Springbok powerhouse Malcolm Marx has been named the World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year, securing his place among the sport’s elite and becoming only the fourth South African to receive the global honour. The announcement was made at the World Rugby Awards ceremony on Saturday night, cementing a dominant year for South African rugby.
Marx, 31, beat a formidable shortlist that included fellow Springboks Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ox Nché, along with France’s rising star Louis Bielle-Biarrey. His win marks a historic milestone, as Marx becomes the first hooker in the history of the awards to capture the title — a position long overshadowed in major individual accolades.
His performances over the 2025 season were described as “colossal”, with Marx delivering world-class breakdown mastery, unmatched defensive work-rate and decisive contributions in the Rugby Championship, where he scored four tries and featured in 11 Tests. Analysts say his consistency, physicality and set-piece leadership defined South Africa’s campaign.
In accepting the award, Marx said he was “deeply honoured”, adding that the recognition belonged to the entire Springbok system: “This is a team sport. I don’t stand here alone. This reflects the work of my teammates, the coaches, the staff and every South African who supports us.”
His triumph also reinforces the Springboks’ continued global dominance, with South Africa now producing multiple World Rugby award winners across the last decade. The accolade caps a standout year for the national team under the leadership of Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus.
Marx joins an elite group of South African recipients, including Schalk Burger, Bryan Habana and Pieter-Steph du Toit, whose combined achievements reflect the Springboks’ enduring reputation for excellence.
