POLOKWANE — The Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) and ZimTrade, Zimbabwe’s national trade promotion body, have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate cross-border commerce. The agreement signed following endorsement from Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Dr Tshitereke Matibe, aims to eliminate barriers and create new business corridors between the two regions.
The partnership focuses on facilitating market access and encouraging investment opportunities for businesses operating on both sides of the border. ZimTrade Chief Executive Officer Allan Majuru described the agreement as a significant milestone in strengthening regional economic ties. The formalization of the deal follows an extensive period of engagement between the two entities, which included high-level strategic meetings held in Polokwane.
LEDA Director Alan Baloyi expressed his gratitude for the collaboration, emphasizing that the partnership will serve as a catalyst for economic growth. As a special-purpose vehicle for provincial development, LEDA was formed by merging four key entities including Trade and Investment Limpopo and the Limpopo Agribusiness Development Corporation. This unified structure is now being leveraged to position the province as a central hub for Southern African trade.
The economic implications of this deal are substantial for the local manufacturing and agricultural sectors. By streamlining trade protocols and sharing market intelligence, the agencies hope to reduce the costs of doing business across the Beitbridge border. This move is expected to attract fresh capital to the region, as investors seek to capitalize on the formalised cooperation between South Africa’s northernmost province and its neighbor.
Furthermore, the agreement signals a shift toward more integrated regional supply chains. As global market volatility persists, strengthening local and regional trade networks has become a priority for provincial leadership. The reciprocal nature of the deal, which includes upcoming trade missions from Limpopo to Zimbabwe, suggests a long-term commitment to shared prosperity and industrial development in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
