KwaZulu Natal police provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has expressed concern over the growing number of police officers arrested for criminal activities, saying it undermines efforts to combat crime in the province.
His comments follow the arrest of a police officer on charges of robbery, adding to a list of officers apprehended for various offences during the festive season. These incidents have heightened concern within the South African Police Service as law enforcement agencies intensify operations to maintain public safety.
Festive Season Arrests Raise Alarm
Mkhwanazi addressed the issue while conducting law enforcement visibility operations at the Durban beachfront promenade on Thursday. He noted that while police continue to tackle crime, they are also being forced to confront misconduct within their own ranks.
According to the commissioner, officers have recently been arrested for a range of crimes, including drunk driving, robbery and kidnapping. In one of the latest cases, officers were allegedly involved in a robbery at a local shop and were found in possession of their service issued firearms at the time of their arrest.
Zero Tolerance For Corruption
The provincial commissioner stressed that decisive action is being taken against any officer found to be involved in criminal conduct. He reaffirmed that the SAPS remains committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring that those entrusted with enforcing the law are held fully accountable.
Mkhwanazi said such actions are necessary to protect the integrity of the police service and to maintain public trust, particularly during periods of heightened criminal activity.
