Search and rescue operations along the KwaZulu Natal coastline resumed following a series of tragic drowning incidents that overshadowed New Year celebrations. The National Sea Rescue Institute Rocky Bay, working alongside the South African Police Service and Umdoni lifeguards, intensified efforts to locate three young men believed to be 21 years old who have been missing since the early evening of New Year’s Day.
Teams conducted extensive searches both along the shoreline and offshore waters throughout the morning as concern grew over the scale of the tragedy.
Death Toll Confirmed As Search Continues
By Friday morning, authorities confirmed that four people had died in connection with the incidents. An 18 year old woman was found washed ashore on Bazley Beach after being reported missing when she was caught in rip currents at Pennington Beach during New Year celebrations.
Earlier searches resulted in the recovery of two deceased males, both aged 21. One body was located during the initial search operation on the evening of 1 January, while another was found on the beach near Pennington later that night. An 18 year old female was rescued on the same evening and did not sustain any injuries.
Three men, all believed to be 21 years old, remain missing as search efforts continue.

Separate Incident Reported At Ballito Beach
In a separate incident on the same day, emergency services responded to reports from Thompsons Beach in Ballito after a 40 year old man went missing in the surf at around 06h20. Witnesses reported that the man had been swimming with his 13 year old nephew when they encountered rip currents. The teenager was rescued by a bystander, while the man disappeared beneath the water.
Search efforts involved NSRI rescue swimmers, a rescue craft from NAU Ballito and KDM lifeguards using jet skis to scan both the shoreline and surrounding waters. Despite extensive efforts, the man has not yet been located.
