Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, has issued a directive to the council of the University of Zululand in northern KwaZulu-Natal to institute a forensic investigation into corruption allegations. These include claims relating to tender processes, staffing and possible financial misconduct.
Department spokesperson Lunga Nqengelele says Minister Pandor believes the investigation will help shed light on these allegations. “Part of the things the minister hopes to achieve is of course if the allegations are true and that there is corruption that took place at the university that those people are brought to book. If those allegations are not true, and it’s just rumours, then we’ll be able to tell South Africans that these are just rumours. Then the credibility of the university will then be returned to what it was before. Because as it stands the allegations are damning and affect the image of the University”
