The government has extended the registration deadline for spaza shops to 28 February 2025.
Originally, informal business owners and food-handling outlets were required to register by 17 December 2024 as part of efforts to regulate the spaza shop industry.
This initiative was prompted by a surge in foodborne illnesses, which claimed the lives of more than 20 children, allegedly linked to products sold at spaza shops.
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday morning, Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa urged all spaza shop owners to complete their registration before the new deadline.
“Prior to the revised deadline of 28 February 2025, government in all its spheres will continue to implement the action plan to address the crisis of Foodborne illnesses and the illicit trade of goods across the country,” Hlabisa said.
