A planned power outage will affect 16 suburbs in Johannesburg on Thursday, 2 April 2026, as maintenance work is carried out on the electricity network.

City Power Johannesburg confirmed that the outages will impact areas supplied by the Braamfontein and Cydna substations, with electricity expected to be off for up to eight hours in each zone.

AFFECTED AREAS AND TIMES

At the Braamfontein Substation, the outage will run from 08:30 to 16:30 and affect:

  • University No.1
  • Ameshoff Street
  • De Korte Street North
  • Braamfontein Standby
  • Libridge
  • Parktown West
  • Jorissen Street
  • Siemens Street

At the Cydna Substation, power will be interrupted from 09:00 to 17:00 in the following areas:

  • Illovo
  • Illovo East
  • Bramley East
  • Houghton South
  • Athol
  • Melrose
  • Killarney
  • Inanda

City Power has urged residents to treat all electricity supply points as live, as power may be restored at any time.

RECENT RESTORATIONS

The utility also confirmed that power has been restored in several suburbs that experienced outages earlier this week due to faulty cables. These include Mayfair, Fairlands, Turffontein, Regents Park, Oakdene, Rosettenville and surrounding areas.

SOLAR USERS URGED TO REGISTER

City Power is encouraging customers with Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) systems, such as rooftop solar, to register their installations.

Residents who have already installed or are planning to install solar photovoltaic systems must submit the required documentation, including application forms, compliance certificates, technical diagrams, and proof of residence.

TIPS TO REDUCE ELECTRICITY USE

To help manage electricity demand during peak hours, residents are advised to limit the use of high-consumption appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers, and to switch off unused electronics. Using energy-efficient options like LED lighting can also help reduce strain on the grid.

ESKOM REPORTS IMPROVED GRID PERFORMANCE

Meanwhile, Eskom reports continued improvements in grid stability, with a notable increase in the Energy Availability Factor and a reduction in unplanned outages compared to previous years.

The utility also recorded a significant drop in diesel expenditure, signalling improved operational efficiency.
