American car manufacturer Ford has revealed an innovative urban transport solution to help people finish journeys in built-up areas when traffic is too heavy.
The Carr-E is a device created by Kilian Vas, a Cologne-based systems engineer, and is one of 633 design proposals for Ford’s Last Mile Mobility Challenge.
With a range of 14 miles and a top speed of 11 mph, the Carr-E would replace the spare wheel in the underfloor of the boot and can carry up to 260 pounds.
The device is able to carry commuters themselves or heavy objects, with the pedestrian walking with an electronic transmitter so that the Carr-E follows them.
Vas said: “When developing Carr-E, I was inspired by Ford’s expansion into both an auto and a mobility company, but I’m also aware of how rapidly cities are growing and how getting around urban areas will become more complicated. I really wanted to create a device that makes commuting easier and more fun.”
