Five people have lost their lives and 60 others sustained injuries following a collision between a bus and a light motor vehicle on the N6 near East London on Sunday night.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the crash involved a VW Polo and a bus transporting 60 Zimbabwean nationals. All passengers on the bus were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, where they are receiving care for injuries of varying severity.
Department spokesperson Makhaya Komisa confirmed that a criminal case has been opened at the Stutterheim Police Station. Authorities are investigating charges of culpable homicide and reckless driving in connection with the incident.
Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Kodile Ngata has extended condolences to the families of those who died in the crash. He also wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery and urged motorists to follow road safety rules to help prevent similar tragedies.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
