The brutal killing of 23-year-old Kgaogelo Nnonu Marota in Hammanskraal has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of women against gender-based violence.
Marota was allegedly stabbed to death by her former boyfriend, 26-year-old Mfana Ngwenya, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Her father, Thabiso Seema, said the family is devastated by the loss. He explained that Marota had secured a protection order against Ngwenya, citing threats and stalking behaviour, but this was not enough to prevent the tragedy. According to witnesses, she was attacked at around 1am.
Seema described his daughter as humble, respectful, and kind, saying she had been preparing to continue her studies in the Northern Cape before her life was cut short.
He expressed shock at learning of her relationship with Ngwenya and called for harsh punishment, describing the accused as a danger to society.
The attack has also drawn condemnation from advocacy groups. Women For Change founder Sabrina Walter said it was deeply disturbing that the suspect filmed Marota’s body and posted videos of his actions online.
She added that such acts retraumatise grieving families and communities, particularly at a time when the country is meant to be honouring women during Women’s Month.
Police confirmed that Ngwenya was arrested early Friday morning in Carousel View near Maubane. He faces charges of murder and attempted murder after allegedly attacking another woman, believed to be his current girlfriend, who is recovering in hospital. Authorities said he posted his motives on social media shortly after the crimes.
Ngwenya is expected to appear before the Temba Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 August.
