Police have arrested 11 people in connection with the mass shooting in Bekkersdal that claimed the lives of nine people and left the West Rand community in shock.

The arrests follow a deadly incident on Sunday, when gunmen opened fire at the Kwanoxolo Tavern before continuing their shooting spree into nearby streets. The victims were fatally shot during the attack, which authorities have described as indiscriminate.

While the motive behind the killings has not yet been established, Gauteng police confirmed that the latest arrests were made during an operation at a residence suspected of housing illegal miners.

Acting Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Fred Kekana said the operation, which was conducted earlier on Wednesday, resulted in the arrest of multiple suspects and the seizure of several firearms. The weapons are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and the possible motive behind it.
