The Department of Transport has announced the resumption of driving licence card production following the successful repair of the country’s only printing machine.
This comes after a three-month shutdown that began on 5 February 2025, causing nationwide delays and a substantial backlog.
As a result of the breakdown, the department is now working to clear a backlog of 747,748 unprinted driving licence cards.
The disruption severely affected motorists, especially in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape, where the volume of outstanding licences remains the highest.
Meanwhile, provinces like the Northern Cape and Free State have seen fewer challenges, contributing to a more stable recovery in those areas.
To address the delays, the driving licence card agency has extended its operating hours. Progress on reducing the backlog will be communicated as notable milestones are achieved, although the rate of recovery will also depend on the number of new orders processed daily.
