Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on Wednesday

PRETORIA – Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal province on Wednesday, 4 April 2018.

The by-elections will be contested by fifteen (15) candidates from seven political parties and two independent candidates.

Details of the by-elections are as follows:

• Ward 16 in the uMdoni Municipality– KZN212 will be contested by Mbali Judith Cele of the African National Congress (ANC); Wilfred Memela of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); and Kumakwezwe John Mkhize of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).  The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.54% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 74.44% of valid votes.

• Ward 3 in the Mkhambathini Municipality – KZN226 will be contested by Mpilo Goodliving Phoswa, an independent candidate; Patience Nonhlanhla Maphanga of the ANC; Emmanuel Nkosikhona Phungula of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Sifiso Sydney Irvin Khoza of the EFF; and Landiwe Angie Ngqulunga of the IFP.  The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.58% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 57.83 % of valid votes

• Ward 2 in Jozini Municipality – KZN272 will be contested by Siphanandla Thobani Dlamini, an independent candidate; Nkosinathi Xolani Myeni of the ANC; Sibusiso Bhekuyise Mabaso of the EFF; Sibonelo Victor Mathenjwa of the IFP; Nokuthula Joyce Gumbi of the National Freedom Party (NFP); Archangelus Lethuxolo Dlamini of the National Peoples Ambassadors (NPA); and Qinisani Epimarcus Mgomezulu of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).  The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.48% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 52.55% of valid votes.
