Two young rhino calves, aged 12 and 18 months, were rescued in the Kruger National Park on Saturday, 28 February, after alert visitors reported seeing the animals alone.
The calves were spotted resting along a road in the Malelane section of the park, prompting concern. After receiving the report, park authorities moved quickly, coordinating a rescue operation to secure the vulnerable animals and relocate them to safety.
According to South African National Parks, the younger calf was airlifted by helicopter using a sling, while the older calf was transported by crate to a secure facility.
Park management thanked the visitors who raised the alarm, noting that their swift action was instrumental in ensuring the calves’ safety.
Rangers are continuing to search the surrounding area for the calves’ mother. The reason for her absence remains unclear and investigations are ongoing.
Kruger National Park has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting wildlife and expressed appreciation for the public’s ongoing support in safeguarding South Africa’s iconic species.
