Former Manchester United forwards coach Benni McCarthy has returned to South Africa amidst speculation about his next career move.
Recently, McCarthy has been rumored to be in line for a position at Mamelodi Sundowns, currently led by Manqoba Mngqithi.
McCarthy spent the last two seasons on Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff before being let go.
As Ten Hag entered his third season, he brought in fellow Dutchmen Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake. With van Nistelrooy, a former striker, expected to assume McCarthy’s previous role, McCarthy, South Africa’s all-time top goal scorer, has yet to secure a new club.
Despite links to opportunities in Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer, and local rumors suggesting Sundowns’ interest with a potential R2 million salary, McCarthy has not joined any team.
Instead, McCarthy has taken up a new role as a studio analyst for SuperSport, covering the UEFA Champions League.
He remains the only South African to have won the prestigious European competition, achieving this feat with FC Porto in 2004.
McCarthy quickly adapted to his new role, providing expert analysis on Tuesday evening’s fixtures.
Both he and his agent are likely still on the lookout for high-level coaching opportunities.
With AmaZulu recently parting ways with Juan Pablo Martin, this could be a potential option for McCarthy and his team.
