Bellarmine Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has withdrawn his bail application at the Alexandra Magistrates Court. His co-accused, Tobias Matondze, was also present in court on Wednesday.
Their legal team confirmed that they intend to pursue a plea agreement, following revelations that both men are in South Africa illegally.
Mugabe and Matondze face multiple charges stemming from an incident at their Hyde Park residence last month, where they allegedly shot and injured an employee. Charges include attempted murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition, theft, pointing a firearm, defeating the ends of justice, and contravening the Immigration Act.
The defence noted that their illegal status complicates the bail process, as proving they are not a flight risk is a key consideration. “We do not want to waste the court’s time and understand the processes involved in applying for bail,” said their attorney.
“At this point, we want to deal with the matter and its merits.”
The case has now been transferred to a trial court, where details of any potential plea negotiations are expected to be clarified next Tuesday.
