President Cyril Ramaphosa turns seventy three this week as his administration navigates a busy and politically significant period, with government activity increasing ahead of the upcoming G20 Leaders Summit.
National Executive Reshuffle Takes Effect
Ramaphosa has formally sworn in the newly appointed members of his National Executive following last week’s cabinet reshuffle. The latest changes aim to strengthen governance, sharpen the government’s focus on priority sectors and improve service delivery.
Willem Abraham Stephanus Aucamp has taken office as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, while Alexandra Lilian Amelia Abrahams has assumed the role of Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.
These developments come as government stakeholders gather for a G20 Breakfast Panel ahead of the G20 Leaders Summit on twenty two and twenty three November. The event is set to be historic, marking the first time South Africa will host the summit on African soil.
Economic Outlook Shows Signs of Recovery
In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa shared a positive assessment of the country’s economic direction. He noted that several indicators suggest early signs of recovery, including a recent decline in unemployment and progress towards achieving a third consecutive primary budget surplus.
The president also highlighted improvements in the energy sector, with Eskom showing signs of stabilisation after years of operational challenges.
Ramaphosa said South Africa has maintained its commitment to economic recovery despite global and domestic pressures such as the pandemic, the energy crisis and a difficult global trade environment. He credited the progress to sustained collaboration between government, business, labour and civil society. He views these partnerships as essential to building a resilient economy.
The president added that government intends to maintain this forward momentum to support inclusive growth, create jobs and improve living conditions across the country.
