Suspended EMPD acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni City Manager Kagiso Lerutla will remain behind bars until at least Thursday after the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court postponed their bail application.
The delay will allow the defence to receive the charge sheet, which is expected to outline the full extent of the allegations against the two officials.
Both men were remanded in custody following their court appearance.
Mkhwanazi faces charges including fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice. He was arrested at his Gauteng home on Saturday by the SAPS task team linked to the Madlanga Commission. Authorities reportedly discovered ammunition during the arrest. He has been on precautionary suspension since November 2025.
Lerutla was taken into custody a day later at OR Tambo International Airport. His legal team has indicated that the case against him relates to an incident dating back to 2019.
The arrests form part of a broader investigation into alleged irregularities within the Ekurhuleni Metro.
Mkhwanazi’s recent testimony before the Madlanga Commission has placed him at the centre of the ongoing probe.
The matter is expected to return to court on Thursday, when prosecutors are likely to present further details as both accused prepare to formally apply for bail.
