Flights at Dubai International Airport began gradually resuming on Monday after a drone-related incident triggered a fire at a nearby fuel tank, prompting a temporary suspension of operations.
Dubai Airports confirmed that flights to and from the airport were restarting to selected destinations after the precautionary suspension.
Authorities said the incident affected a fuel tank near the airport, causing a fire that was later contained. Officials reported that no injuries were recorded.
Witnesses in Dubai said they saw a thick plume of black smoke rising near the airport earlier in the day. Some passengers waiting for flights were reportedly evacuated to a lower level of the terminal while authorities managed the situation.
Limited Flights As Operations Resume
Emirates said it expected to operate a limited schedule after 10:00 local time, noting that some flights had been cancelled while authorities assessed the situation.
The airline had earlier advised travellers not to come to the airport as officials worked to ensure the safe resumption of operations.
Meanwhile, Dubai Police temporarily closed the main road leading to the airport during the incident.
Regional Tensions Escalate
The drone incident comes amid escalating tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have reported multiple drone attacks in recent weeks.
Earlier in the week, two falling drones injured four people near the airport.
Neighbouring Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting more than 60 drones overnight in its eastern region.
Officials say Iran has launched more than 1,900 missiles and drones toward the UAE since the start of the conflict, targeting both military assets and civilian infrastructure, including airports, ports and oil facilities across the Gulf.
