Rescue operations for four miners trapped underground at the Ekapa mine have been slowed by increasing water levels in the shaft.
The miners were trapped in February following a mudslide that blocked access to parts of the mine. Search-and-rescue teams initially worked to recover five workers, but on Monday, the body of one miner was recovered. Efforts to locate the remaining four continue.
Ekapa Resources and Ekapa Minerals previously stated that clearing the mudslide could take at least 18 months, highlighting the challenging conditions underground.
Recovery operations are ongoing, alongside the formal identification process for the recovered worker. Over the past 24 hours, rising water inflows have further complicated access, slowing progress toward the miners’ last known location.
Despite the difficult conditions, mine rescue teams, technical specialists, and support personnel remain committed to reaching the trapped workers as safely and efficiently as possible.
